Project Sigil, a virtual tabletop (VTT) from Wizards of the Coast, has faced a major setback with approximately 90% of its development team laid off shortly after its February 2025 launch.

This information comes from a LinkedIn post from Andy Collins, the Senior Game Rules Specialist for the recently launched product.

Andy Collins served as a Senior Game Rules Specialist at Wizards of the Coast from April 2024 to March 2025. During his nearly year-long tenure, he acted as the de facto Design Lead for Sigil, where he oversaw rules development and game implementation according to his LinkedIn profile.

He does add in that heโ€™ll โ€œbe pulling for the crew left behind whoโ€™ll do their best to keep improving and iterating the experience we shipped last month.โ€ This could mean as far as he knows, the product will continue to exist.

Introduced in August 2022 as part of the One D&D initiative, Sigil aimed to enhance Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) gameplay with 3D features, integration with D&D Beyond, and built-in rules support.

It launched as a full release, announced via a brief press release rather than the previously planned beta, requiring a high-spec Windows computer and a D&D Beyond subscription for full access, setting it apart from platforms like Roll20 and Foundry.

Sigil was showcased at events like GenCon, where it powered a live dragon battle with Baldurโ€™s Gate 3 characters, though technical difficulties were evident.

According to those who were invited to attend a press event by WOTC in early 2025, it was presented as a hybrid character builder and VTT, capable of crafting quick encounters. Developers did note that it wouldnโ€™t fit every tables style.

Concerns about microtransactions for miniatures, adventures, and classes surfaced early on, but as of now, we know little about it other than the current need for a Master tier subscription to access the complete system and host games.

With the team now drastically reduced, itโ€™s uncertain whether Sigil will receive updates or tie into upcoming releases like Dragon Delves. Wizards of the Coast has not outlined plans for its future support or development.

We wish all the best for those who were negatively impacted by these layoffs.
