Nintendo has officially confirmed some of the key features coming to Switch 2, set to release on June 5, 2025.

But is it worth buying? Here are the key details unveiled during Nintendo Direct.

Nintendo Switch 2 key features and specifications

The Nintendo Switch 2 features a larger 7.9-inch LCD screen that supports 1080p resolution, HDR, and up to 120FPS for smoother and more detailed visuals. Despite the bigger screen, the console maintains the same thickness as its predecessor.

The Joy-Con controllers have also received an upgrade. They now attach magnetically to the console and feature larger SL and SR buttons for improved ergonomics. Additionally, both the left and right Joy-Cons now have mouse support, offering precise controls for certain FPS games like Metroid.

For the first time, the Switch 2 includes a built-in microphone, allowing players to use GameChat for voice communication in multiplayer games. The device now comes with two USB-C ports, both of which can be used for charging or connecting accessories, such as the newly announced Nintendo Switch 2 Camera.

With 256GB of internal storage, the Switch 2 provides more space for digital games, reducing the need for external microSD cards. Meanwhile, the new dock enables gameplay at 4K resolution with HDR support when connected.

Nintendo has also confirmed that Switch 2 will be backward compatible with digital and physical Switch games from the original console. Additionally, the new game cartridges will now be red and feature faster reading speeds.

Nintendo is reportedly offering two versions of the Switch 2 in Japan. The Japanese-only version costs 49,980 yen (approximately $334 USD) and is region-locked to Japanese Nintendo Accounts with no support for other languages.

The multi-language version, which supports international accounts and multiple languages, is priced at 69,980 yen (approximately $468 USD).

Is the Nintendo Switch 2 worth buying?

The Nintendo Switch 2 brings significant improvements that make it a worthy upgrade for both new and existing players. The “better” graphics finally solves the long standing issue of Switch dropping frames and the janky edges commonly found in Zelda franchise and Pokemon Scarlet and Violet.

For current Switch owners, the backward compatibility ensures that your existing digital and physical game collection will still be playable. However, the pricing difference between the Japan-exclusive and international models may affect your decision.

Ultimately, if you’re looking for a next-gen Nintendo experience with better graphics, smoother performance, and new features, the Switch 2 is absolutely worth considering.
