A new live-action Dungeons & Dragons series, tentatively titled “The Forgotten Realms,” is on its way to Netflix, according to Deadline’s initial reporting, with Variety subsequently confirming more details about the project.
Dungeons and Dragons Netflix show in the works
Stepping Into the Realms
The “Forgotten Realms” have been a centerpiece of Dungeons & Dragons lore since 1987, famous for spawning numerous beloved characters and storylines.
Both Deadline and Variety note that Netflix’s adaptation aims to dive deep into this sprawling fantasy world, bringing its elves, humans, orcs, and other fantastical beings to the screen in a way that could launch a larger D&D universe.
A Fresh Take for the D&D Netflix show

This development is distinct from previous Dungeons & Dragons adaptations, including Honor Among Thieves as well as any earlier TV series attempts (like those once associated with Paramount+). Instead, Hasbro Entertainment—under its newer in-house approach—has enlisted Crevello to craft an entirely new concept that stands on its own.
Power Players Behind the Scenes
- Shawn Levy: As executive producer (and with an overall deal at Netflix), he’s fresh off directing Deadpool & Wolverine and is still involved in the final season of Stranger Things. Levy’s presence further solidifies Netflix’s commitment to weaving big-budget, fantasy-driven storytelling into its lineup.
- Drew Crevello: Serving as both writer and showrunner, he brings experience from the Apple TV+ limited series WeCrashed, starring Jared Leto and Anne Hathaway. Crevello reportedly penned the pilot script and will guide the creative direction for The Forgotten Realms.

Why Netflix?
The streaming platform has already provided a massive boost to D&D’s cultural profile thanks to Stranger Things, which frequently spotlights the classic tabletop game. According to Variety, Netflix’s history with genre hits and Hasbro Entertainment’s readiness to expand D&D’s live-action footprint made this partnership a logical step.
Looking Ahead
No casting or production start dates have been revealed just yet. Still, both outlets suggest that if the show is successful, it could mark the beginning of a broader Dungeons & Dragons cinematic universe at Netflix.
With nearly five decades of lore and countless iconic characters in the Realms, there’s more than enough material to keep fantasy fans hooked for years to come.

Neither Netflix nor Hasbro Entertainment has commented on the record so far. But with Shawn Levy and Drew Crevello teaming up, and Hasbro Entertainment keen to expand one of its flagship properties, it appears that The Forgotten Realms is on the path to becoming another major fantasy cornerstone in Netflix’s lineup.
