Critical Role C4E22 recap
Golden Orchard Cold Open Explained
The episode begins with Thimble and Occtis present at the Golden Orchard as the Sundered Houses meet following the end of the Falconers Rebellion. Thjazi has been imprisoned and is awaiting trial.
Occtis is only eight years old, taking in the magic of the Orchard while his father encourages him to use this opportunity to try to connect to the Tenebral Reaches, something he has struggled with so far.
Lady Aranessa Royce is also introduced during this time, still benefiting in power from the open gates to fairy. She steps out and tells Primus that her father is requesting his presence inside.
While Occtis explores, two trees come to life and speak with him, offering him a golden apple, which he accepts.
Not long after, his older brother Ethrand throws a rock and hits him in the back of the head.
Nearby, Thimble and her brother Twig are watching from a tree. After some back and forth, Thimble jumps in to intervene. She throws a rock but misses badly, then leans into it and successfully intimidates Ethrand into backing off anyway.
This leads to the first interaction between Occtis and Thimble before the moment is interrupted by barking dogs from inside, forcing them to hide while Twig distracts the search.

Back to the Present: A Plan to Stay Hidden
The episode then returns to the present with the Schemers, picking back up in initiative as the party deals with a Crowkeeper before he can alert others.
Bolaire acts first, stepping out and casting Command with the word “Silence,” which succeeds. Azune follows up immediately, moving in and landing a natural 20, killing the Crowkeeper before he can call out.
With other Crowkeepers moving through the area, the party shifts to a strategy of staying out of sight while creating confusion below.
Murray uses Mage Hand to throw a dagger in a way that makes it look like it came from Zaghi, successfully creating tension between Zaghi and another presence in the room.
Laumy Appears and the Fight Escalates
That presence turns out to be Laumy, a strange creature that enters the doorway and causes black muck to surge up around it.
As the fight continues, the party stays above the ladder, using positioning and spells to remain uninvolved while their enemies begin turning on each other.
Laumy quickly proves to be dangerous, killing a Crowkeeper in a brutal way by sending tendrils into his head.
Hal takes advantage of the chaos to move down the ladder and reach Demodus, who is stable but unconscious. He begins to move him back toward safety, casting Healing Word to bring him back up.
However, as Demodus wakes, he casts Mage Armor on Hal and rolls a natural 1 on stealth, creating a visible magical effect that reveals their position.
At the same time, Azune moves to intercept incoming Crowkeepers, while Murray works to help pull Demodus back up the ladder.
The fight begins to shift as more enemies arrive.

Turning Points in the Battle
Several key moments define the encounter:
- Hal casts Shatter, dealing damage and collapsing part of the platform before retreating up the ladder
- Murray uses Demodus as part of a creative Color Spray play
- Bolaire moves partway down the ladder and casts Dissonant Whispers, rolling a natural 20 and forcing Laumy to flee through cracks in the stone
During the fight, Laumy is identified as a raugrannath, a creature from the Fey realm of Harrow.
With Laumy gone, the party regains control of the situation and continues dealing with the remaining Crowkeepers.
Hal secures a kill with the Liar’s Blade, while Azune lands additional hits using quickened Booming Blade. Demodus contributes by using illusion magic to trick enemies into giving up their weapons.
Eventually, the party is left with one remaining Crowkeeper, who they convince to surrender.
Demodus Explains What Happened
With the fight over, the party speaks with Demodus to understand how he ended up involved.
He explains that he took a job through the school, speaking first with Dean Kora before being introduced to Trimus Tachonis, who offered him 250 gold to assist with work for the Royce family.
He also mentions Ophelia Seremai, who he describes as unpleasant and distinct in appearance, and Lt. Junaeus, who was working with her.
While hiding at one point, Demodus overheard a conversation between Ophelia and Junaeus. Junaeus reported that “the falcon has been delivered to Obrimus Manor,” and confirmed that the grounds were being swept.
Junaeus then questioned whether they were considered loose ends.
Ophelia responded, “so are you,” before reassuring her that she would receive a scar and had nothing to worry about.
Demodus fled shortly after.
He also recalls hearing that an Argosian delegation had arrived, and that there were plans to visit King Augustus “sooner rather than later.”

Searching the Hideout
The party searches the area and discovers that it was being used as a meeting place away from the city.
They find:
- Potions of healing
- Gold
- A table marked with names tied to debts or other dealings
Through Murray’s use of Detect Magic and a strong Arcana check, they determine that Laumy is a fae creature from the realm of Harrow.
They also find a piece of Sylvan poetry with a missing line. When Murray speaks the final line aloud—“to love the world is to weep”—a hidden panel opens.
Inside, they find:
- Silver-capped bottles
- A necklace with charms
- Velvet pouches
- 40 blank spell glyphs
Bolaire’s Decision
After the search, Bolaire reveals that he needs to take a new body.
He prepares by taking the clothes from the captured Crowkeeper and asks Hal to kill his current body. Hal follows through, killing the restrained man.
When Hal removes the mask, he finds writing inside that reads: “Your thoughts unravel.”
He hears overwhelming applause and is briefly pulled toward it, but ultimately resists and instead places the mask onto the Crowkeeper.
Bolaire takes control of the new body. The original consciousness remains, screaming within, as Bolaire regains control and begins stabilizing himself.
To prevent further investigation, Bolaire destroys the face of Aubrus Drime, ensuring Speak with Dead cannot be used.
Where the Episode Ends
With the situation resolved, the party prepares to leave the sewers.
Before doing so, Demodus casts a spell to create false magical evidence throughout the area, including guild signatures and symbols tied to other groups.
The group also takes a moment to process what has happened. Murray reflects on Thjazi’s final words and what they might mean for her, while the rest of the party moves forward with their next steps.
The episode ends as they leave the depths of the sewers behind.
